This will be our primary means of reaching you in case you are selected or we have any questions, so be sure to write in an email address that you check fairly regularly (and that your spam filters let our emails through, domain name is talnexus.com).
There is a chance we may contact some applicants for a phone interview as part of the evaluation process, so make sure this is a number where you can be reached.
Optional: This can be your personal or professional site, or some other site where we can view or read some of your work, such as a YouTube page or a blog.
If you are an alumni of one or more of our other programs, please select as many that apply. (If you are part of TN alumni, please type the word "Alumni" in the essay boxes portion of this application.)
Choose whether you are:
1. A writer on the Writer/Director Track
2. A director on the Writer/Director Track
3. A writer AND director on the Writer/Director Track
4. A producer on the Producer Track
If you are applying solo to the Writer/Director Track, you agree to be paired with another filmmaker on the same track at the discretion of TalNexus.
If you are applying with a teammate(s), everyone must fill out an application and be selected to participate.
All producers on Producer track will be attached to two projects by TalNexus.
If you selected option 1 or option 2 above, write in the name of your prospective teammate who is also applying. (They need to submit their own application, and they should write in your name as their prospective teammate -- unless for whatever reason they've chosen another applicant as their hoped-for teammate.) Leave this blank if you chose option 3 or 4 above.
If you are applying with a prospective teammate in mind whose name you wrote in above, write in his or her email address here. Ideally, this will be the same email address that he or she writes in on his or her application. This will help us to keep track of everyone, as there is a chance two or more applicants will have the same name. (Again, leave this blank if you chose option 2 above.)
If you are not in the greater Los Angeles area and plan to film your project in your home city, please list some film production resources in your city that you are familiar with in order for you to successfully produce your project. (e.g., Precision Camera in Austin, TX; TM Equipment Rentals in New Orleans, LA)
If you plan to film in and around Los Angeles, you may leave this area blank.
In 1500 characters (about 300 words total) or less, please tell us about three individual rights that you would add to the U.S. Constitution that are either not currently present or that you think have been ignored or neglected.
Please identify 1 filmmaker, 1 author, and 1 politician or political thinker whose work you admire, and in 500 characters (about 100 words) or less each (300 words in total), tell us why.

You may submit up to three different treatments.
Treatments must be a one-page narrative description of the story you want to make into a short film or web series in the SmashCut Film Lab program.
Your treatment should also include at the top: your name, your prospective team-mate's name (if applicable), a title, and a logline (a one-sentence summary of your story). If you are applying as part of a prospective team, you both should submit the same treatment.
We will only read one page of your treatment, so if it is longer than one page, the rest of it will be disregarded.
You must submit a creative sample of some past work. This is something different from the treatment for the video you propose to make. Check the box that represents the format you are submitting:
OPTION A is a written work such as a screenplay, treatment or short story;
OPTION B is a video or film.
Then follow the instructions below for how to submit the type of format you chose.
Write the title or name of the creative sample you are submitting. If your creative role (director, writer, etc.) is not clear from the work's credits, tell us here.
If you are submitting a written sample, please be sure it is different than the idea you hope to make if selected for the film lab. PDF ONLY.
Accepted file types: pdf.
If you are submitting a film or video as your sample, please provide a link or URL in the open field above to a website (YouTube page, etc.) where it can viewed online. Be sure it is representative of what you plan on doing if selected into the film lab. You either wrote, directed, or produced it.
Check the skill sets in which you have had extensive training and/or experience, and that which you feel comfortable doing. (You may check more than one.)
Tell us how you found out about us, such as through a particular listing, article, blog, organization, or personal referral. Please be specific, e.g., don't just say 'a blog," or "personal referral," but tell us what blog or the name of the person.
Optional: Here you can tell us anything else you think is vital for us to know, such as special requirements or scheduling issues, that isn't addressed anywhere else in the application form. If you are a foreign national, here you can indicate your legal work status (e.g., green card or work visa), which is required to participate in our programs. Unfortunately we cannot help you to obtain legal work status, that is up to you.
By checking this box, you attest that you have read and understood, and that you agree to abide by, the Rules and Release Agreement
for our programs. (Click on the link if you haven't read it already.)
